MUSEUM-ARCHIVE HISTORY For years, the Canadian Lithuanian Community had been looking for a home to preserve and display historically significant artifacts of Lithuanians in Canada. Based on the conceptual planning by architect George Sederavičius, the museum-archives became a reality in 1988. Every few months new exhibitions are featured, important documentation gathered, catalogued, preserved and stored.
ACTIVITIES Members of the archive collect, organize, preserve and display documents, photographs, videos, film, audio recordings, fine art, textiles, memorabilia, souvenirs of community events, uniforms, medals, coins, maps, flags, and rare books or periodicals which pertain to Lithuania or Lithuanian Canadians. We also have a small lending library of 2,148 books on Lithuanian history, archaeology, art, anthropology, folklore, music and literature.
NOTABLE COLLECTIONS Museum: handwoven textiles from 19th and early 20th century, Lithuanian coins, art by Lithuanian artists old and new, rare memorabilia S. Darius and S. Girėnas (Lithuanian trans-Atlantic pilots), military medals and uniforms, 990 rare books, objects made by prisoners in Siberia, posters, flags, etc.
ARCHIVES Approx. 280 ft. of archival materials in 291 fonds/collections, history of Lithuanian Canadian organizations , immigration history (especially for post-WWII period), documentation of Lithuanians in post-war DP camps, documentation of regaining of independence by Lithuania 1988-1991 (early Sąjūdis newspapers and hand-outs, tape recordings of Sąjūdis strategy meetings, ephemera from first Lithuanian elections, photographs and videos of demonstrations), unpublished documents from Allied "Displaced Persons" camps post-WWII in Germany, unpublished oral history. |
