CHURCH HISTORY In 1952, Fr. Petras Ažubalis, then pastor of St. John the Baptist Lithuanian Parish in Toronto, urged members of the Lithuanian community to buy lots for cottages at Wasaga Beach on Georgian Bay. The lots were quite inexpensive at the time and the beach was reminiscent of the beach in Palanga, Lithuania on the Baltic Sea coast. Some lots were purchased for a children's summer camp and a community centre. Toronto Archbishop, Cardinal James McGuigan authourized Masses to be said at this site for the benefit of the Lithuanian community. The centre was built and a chapel in the centre was consecrated on August 4, 1955. The centre was a wooden structure, not insulated and only suitable for summer use. Over the years, as more and more Lithuanians started to live in the surrounding area permanently, it was deemed necessary to winterize the buildings so that Masses could be said year round and the community would be able to make use of the centre's facilities on an ongoing basis. Under the guidance of Msgr. Jonas Staškevičius in 1985, the community members themselves, under the direction of Petras Bridickas, winterized one of the smaller buildings for weekly Sunday Masses. In 1993, again community members headed by Vytautas Senkus winterized and remodelled the main building which houses the chapel. Sunday Masses are said every week at the chapel at 2 pm from October to June and at 10:30 am from July through September. |
